Want something to blast pests in my yard (rural 75 acres). Recommend me something reliable and choke preference. Thanks.

Mossberg Bantam 510 in .410 is what you want. Adult sized, lightweight and made in the USA.

Mossberg, Henry, Rock Island Arms all make good shotguns.  The issue in my area is finding ammunition.  #4 3" .410 is unobtanium here.

Only gun I've ever owned that I really wished I had back was a mag-fed, bolt-action .410 Savage (or maybe Stevens) that my parents sold off when I went on active duty.

Sweet little gun, will have another some day!

Look at 20 Gauge. .410 here is very rare and when you CAN find it it's twice the price and almost invariably is small birdshot.

By comparision, the local Academy has 6 different 20 ga loads from #3 buck to #8 birdshot and slugs.

My critter blaster is the henry 410 axe.  It only has the 2.5" chamber if that matters to you.
If I wanted a 3", I'd go with the mossberg shockwave 410.

Both of those are available as 26" "firearm" or a full length shotgun if you want a longer gun with longer range.

What about the Winchester Model 9410 Traditional?

or a sweet O/U 410?

I have got to agree with this. What will a .410 do better than a 20ga ? Ok , less recoil , but for a small person a 20 ga with skeet or trap load is going to be not to bad.

Noise is about the same if you have neighbors and anyplace you shouldn't be shooting a 20 you also should not touch off a .410 .

Cost and availability of .410 makes it really hard and to be truthful the .410 throws so little shot it is hard to kill stuff .

My way of thinking is a pistol with shotshells for real close tiny stuff (tweety birds inside a barn or snakes at 6 feet) , anything more the twenty is the way to go.

I would advise the OP( if he has his heart set on the .410 )to go out shopping and get himself a decent pile of .410 ammo before he gets the shotgun

410 ammo is virtually Not Available.
Go 12 ga or 20 ga single shot if you want a nice one order in a Henry if it’s just a beater try the pawn shops. You can always use a chamber reducer and drop a 410 chamber reducer into a 12 or 20 or pick up a chamber reducer in a pistol caliber.

5 minutes on Ammo Seek yields 263 results. They'll ship it to your door.

Another vote for the Mossberg.

My 410 recommendation is you learn how to reload it if you are sold on 410, because in 2 years I think I've found 5 boxes, and I'm always looking

I haven't had any issues finding 410 ammo.  I've got a stack of slugs and several hundred in different sizes of shot and a couple flavors of the gucci defender and defense loads
Quick peek shows academy sports with a couple variants in stock.  #8 shot is $17 for 25 rounds.
Federal has 2.5" and 3" in stock on their website, showing a few different size shot from 4, 6, 7, 7.5, 8, 9.  Some of them listed as high-brass. Limit 80 boxes of 25rd on some of them.  Thats barely enough.  maybe if you work some dry-fire training into your routine.

I got this Mossberg model 183 and Savage model 25 for 6 hours of wood splitting for an old timer that didn't use them anymore.
The .410 runs .444 Marlin brass "shell s" great.
No feeding or extraction issues.
It sits at the back door for MotherChukars garden gun.
1/2 oz #4s with 13 grains of Lil' Gun does wonders.
Guy that gave it to me even had the box, paper work and spare chokes.

I just got an email listing a 3 barrel .410. Know nothing about it, but would be neat. I have an old single barrel .410 a friend gave me. Good little truck gun.

Turkey hunting with a .410 using #8 or #9 TSS shot is getting popular around here. Most of the guns I see in use are the Mossberg 510 or Stevens 301. The 301 comes with screw in chokes, the 510 can have them added by a well equipped gunsmith.

Joel Etchen usually has some Beretta O/U guns in .410/28 combo sets if you desire something more gentlemanly.

I grew up with a .410. Everything was just out of range. Wanted to buy the 20GA with my own $$$ but my father wouldn't go with it.
Just forget the .410, not worth it.

I like the Winchester 9410, as another poster responded. Puts a smile on everybody's face when they shoot it. Marlin makes similar lever action,
410. 9+1 capacity.

I spend the entire year in Florida and the gun show scalpers buy all the 410 from Walmart and Academy and sell it for $30 a box. Haven’t seen it in store in a while.

But I’d buy a 28 gauge for your purposes.

I grew up on a Mossberg 410. I've shot a number of stevens bolt actions. I've owned the big dog, the Marlin Super Goose 10 gauge.

Don't let nostalgia corrupt your memory. Anyone that's ever done any real shooting with a bolt action shotgun, never wants to see those bolt action shotguns return. I'm not sure I've ever seen one shoot 3 shells consecutively in my life.

That being said I’m fascinated with the .410. I love shooting game with it. Love shooting varmints with it and love shooting clays with it.

The 28 gauge is the exact opposite of the .410. Called the square load by 28 gauge enthusiasts who claim the bore diameter and pay load are perfectly balanced.

The .410 bore is too small and it produces long shot strings and poor patterns compared to the other gauges.

That being said it’s just pure fun to shoot. Especially on game such as quail or even pheasants. .410 slugs kill much harder than most think. But I have no experience killing anything with .410 buckshot.

Lol, I've always felt the same way. 410 is somehow a class in competition, but a 16 gauge isn't?

There's only one real reason to own a 410 anymore in my opinion, and that is to get one of the more oddball shotguns. That would be a lever action (henry), AR (AR 410), or even revolver (Taurus Judge).

I'm no fan of the 28 gauge either though. At least it kind of makes sense where it came from, 54 caliber smoothbore muzzleloaders. There's no magic to it. There's nothing a 28 gauge can do that a 20 gauge can't. Some guns the 28 gauge might be 2-3 ounces lighter is about it.

I don’t know your money situation, but a 410 double side by side is a ton of fun for critter ridder. I had a busted ass Steven’s side by side that served as a double rife while I Safari’ed chipmunks and charging moles on my part of the way North Mozambican territory. Even as a somewhat functional adult a 410 double was a blast on my after dinner walks. Ammo selection sucks now so I agree that I would opt for a 20. I can confirm that I have killed everything you can legally hunt or vermin eradicate with a 20 ga shotgun. My vote would be for the Huglu side by side. You’re never too old to be a kid.

I like shooting 410, I just wish the ammo was more budget friendly.

I actually bought a semi-auto 410 at Walmart for $180 OTD.  It works well with most 3 inch loads.

I wouldn't get a semi as they can be load dependent and you never know what loads are available locally to feed it.

A Mossberg pump or simple single shot for pests is likely a good candidate.

I have a 10 gauge double I run with 20 gauge and 410 adapter inserts - its a lot of fun

It's hard to beat the Mossberg 500 with its full choke barrel. I've been using my 410 Mossberg 500 since around 1985 and have never had any issues with it. I have taken plenty of small game and turkeys with it. I have even used it for an occasional round of skeet.

I mostly shoot 3" shells for hunting and have been reloading 410 shells since 1996. Even with today's prices, it is still cheaper to reload 410 shells.

Before I saved up mu lawn mowing money for the Mossberg 500. I used my dad's old single shot Western Field 410 or an old bolt action 410.

AR .410, MLok, 18" stainless barrel, 5 or 15 rd mags

Always wanted one of those. Not sure I've ever needed one lol. NOT the polymer lower version, however.

I’d look for an old Savage 24.  I have one that’s been converted to a later hammer with the selector and I love it
