Hey guys, guess this is the right place for this.
Currently assembling a 10.5" AR10 upper in .308 (it'll be suppressed). Why? I'll let you know when I figure it out.

When it comes to ballistics I know more than most but less than many.

Trying to decide between a magnifier with a red dot or an LVPO.
I figure with an LVPO I cannot use the 5.56/.308 reticle as it'll be significantly slower (I estimate 2200 fps).

So would a .300 BO/7.62x39 reticle be a close(r) match.
I'm not looking for perfection here.

Thanks.

Calculate your holds first or estimate them.  You may find your BDC is only good to 300 or so.  Then it makes sense to just use RDS and mag

What is the max range you plan to shoot regularly?
Paper, deer, zombies?

Sight in ~2" high at 100yd and you'll be minute of heart from 0-250.

All of my LPVOs have non-BDC reticles to avoid mismatch issues with different ammo/guns.

Just get an LPVO (or prism) with a mil reticle and you won’t have anything to worry about.

Neither option will fill all of your needs. I hate LPVOs but would suggest one here because you will still be able to reach out a bit for hunting/fun.

This is the route I would take.

A BDC will only be 100% accurate when the velocity of the ammo, BC, weather, and scope height all line up.  Then there is the target distances to deal with.  The targets at my range are not placed exactly 100 yards apart, and they won't be in the real world either.

Once you know the actual muzzle velocity of the ammo in your gun,  you can create a dope sheet using a simple ballistics calculator.  It doesn't matter if the LPVO is in Mils, MOA, or even BDC, the sheet will tell you where to hold.
