Just need to install the proper locking shoulder.

I wonder if it will be loud.
But man, what a handy sized rifle.

Very nice!

I did a rifle course with a guy who had a Para FAL. One of the first targets was an almost point blank target on cardboard. The muzzle blast from his first round just turned it into confetti.

The rest of us just had to pretend there was a target there

Very cool. Back in the day, an associate had a BARK, a BAR cut down to 10-12", that was a BLAST! Have also fired a 10" G3, also an attention getter!

I love it. So awesome. I have an 18" FAL and would really like to have an SBR FAL.  What's the best way to do this? DSA pistol and eform 1?

Put that thing through a chrono.  I want to see what kind of velocity you are getting out of that.

And just like that, 2nd round after the short barrel install, broken hammer. Shortest range trip ever.

Was it loud at the indoor range? What??? Can't hear you!

That kind of defeats the purpose of my Short-N-Loud theme I've got going, but I need to get a flash hider mount for my HVT-QD for it.

Who made that hammer?  The DSA guns they sold to SAN Parks in South Africa had problems over there with their hammers breaking like that.

As far as I know it was an original Imbel hammer, lower is all original Imbel, but looks MIM to me. Of course the lower was rode hard and put away wet for many many years based on the wear patterns.

What's a good replacement? Any tool steel ones available?

My first FAL was a 16" DSA with that horrible DSA brake. That thing set car alarms off at the range.

On a crisp morning me and a friend were the first and only ones at the range. Blam all the dew fell off the tin  roof.

I've never shot a short 308 with a brake, but all reports (ha) indicate it is brutal; what you are going for

My hunting rifle is a 16" 308 with no muzzle device, and recoil and blast isn't all that bad. Have you tried shooting with no brake for curiosities sake?

I have a 21" DSA Para that I get an urge to chop every other week or so, but the blast is my main holdup. I am co sidelong a flashcan or similar.

He doesn't really need to worry about 922(r).  He's not an importer/manufacturer.

I didn't, I just changed out the barrel assy and SBR'ed it. It's a CAI gun.

I have a friend with an 11" barrel on a SBR FAL. It was fun for the first 50 or so shots and was painful with doubled hearing protection after.  He doesn't shoot it much now.  I built mine with a 13" barrel.  Much easier on the shooter and has enough range to be useful for ME.

Build what makes you happy.

That is beautiful! I've been contemplating such a build myself, but not sure how much it would get used. Have some other SBR projects that need completed first.

Are barrel swaps tricky on these? Special tools required?
Link Posted: 3/17/2022 6:15:31 AM EDT
[Last Edit: tac556] [#31]
Looks like it would be a handy and enjoyable rifle if you used some sort of regular FH instead of a brake or adding length with the can.  Not a fan of brakes myself.  My cut down STG is pretty nice compared to a full length STG.

Sucks about the trigger, doesn’t sound like an OEM trigger to do that...  I would just slap in any old metric trigger and see how it does.

EDIT- just re-read that it is a CAI built gun....  that means it likely has one of their cast US made trigger groups in it.  Not known for being very good.  You may want to make sure your piston is not a 2 piece Century one as well.

It's not tricky, you just need some tools. Receiver wrench, good solid bench vice, headspace gauges and some pin gauges.

We've got one with the barrel cut to about 14" or so with a long enough (to get it over 16") compensator welded to the barrel.

In the early days of Appleseed when all the manly men with their .30 caliber battle rifles were attending, no one wanted to be around it on the firing line.  They'd spread left/right to get away from my son or ask us to move to one end of the line where they could leave a gap between us and them.

I realize, at times, that is it pretty loud but if I'm shooting my M1A and concentrating on the targets I don't really notice the concussion/blast from it.  When we got it we shot it a lot to make sure it was reliable and accurate and neither of us realized it was going to be objectionable to some center fire rifle shooters on the firing line.  Didn't notice it being any noisier than the M1A.

I imagine an 11 or 12" will be "somewhat" worse.

I have one of DSA's original 16" guns.  It is a good fun gun and the blast is moderate, sent up.  That is as close to SBR as I will ever get.

Having an issue loading a photo.

I'm surprised it took that long usually someone is making the 7.62x39 in the first few replies.

Not sure if you've already suppressed it, but if not, in my experience it's tough to make a short FAL cycle properly using the factory gas plug. Some may work, but there's often too little adjustment to compensate for the increased blowback/pressure and the bolt runs too fast (i.e. even completely open there's not enough gas vented to offset what the can adds to the system).

I ended up going to a 2-plug system and swap it when I swap between can and no-can. I have some experimentation left to do with a hybrid plug I had made, but for now it's a fast enough swap that I don't mind, and I just keep the second plug in the grip storage.

Mine is also an 11", fwiw.
