I just bought this for $300. Seems intact so far. Gears and levers all look good. I'm too tired to comment too much this evening.

Doing a 1919 Rhodes 7 inch shaper now. Mineral spirits are pretty much all I use. Works great and gets in under loose paint flakes to help lift them when when scrubbing with a brush. |

I want to get the chuck back plate unscrewed and she is TIGHT! I'm sure it has been on there a long time. It isn't rusted on. Probably had a lot of torque over a long time.
This is my no hammering solution. I'm heating the backing plate and letting it cool over and over with a constant torque of around 1000 ft lbs. Attached File |

A needle scaler works well. This is my old Hendy lathe. Built the same year as I was! The bed was reground and VFD drive installed. The original drive was a DC Thyratron tube power supply. It became unreliable and would let the magic smoke out at random times.

Updates:
The 3 jaw chuck doesn't have outside jaws so it would be very limiting. I decided to go 4 jaw. Found a 12" 4 jaw local that had a lot of dings and dents in the body, but the jaws, screws, and slots are brand new. $120. USA made Cushman. Attached File No adapter plate is available for a 2 3/8-8 spindle.....I have to make one. Cost me $93 shipped to get a 6.75" diameter x 3" long piece of 1045. I'll saw an inch off to reduce the chip pile. Lol. I need to make a gauge to test fit the threads so I ordered a 2-3" thread micrometer to make the process easier. I need the big lathe to make the backing plate for the big lathe. The vfd won't be here until mid next week. |

The Huanyang GT inverter is working great. I just have it on a cord and plug right now. I'll add a switch soon.
The old girl is pretty noisy. One of the gears has a wobbly bushing, so that is on the agenda today. With proper clearance she should quiet down nicely. Attached File The forward feed gear is pretty worn so I'm hoping to switch it with the reverse gear for now. I trued the spindle nose shoulder a bit too. Now I have to true the chuck adapter on my 3 jaw. Lots of work today. |

She is grumpy and noisy but she is cutting really nicely. She is rigid enough that the radius tool cut extremely well. I can produce nice deep chamfers with a 90⁰ tool. This is a chuck adapter for the 12" 4 jaw I bought for the old girl. Still in process. Attached File |

Is the spindle a plain bearing design or rolling element?

If you asked me if this could happen I would not have believed it....
I shimmed the tailstock with two sizeable pieces of 0.010" brass shim. The height is within 0.0015" Then I checked the parallelism of the tailstock ram. Along the top and side we are right at 0.001" of parallel running a dial indicator along its length locked down tight. Then I started turning a test bar. I cut the full length so I could check along the length for variation. I got it within 0.0005" in 12". The best part is that the variation is linear! Next weekend I'll work on getting out the last half thou, although it is plenty close enough for most of my work. With the significant amount of bed wear, a foot of straight shaft has me tickled pink. I rarely ever do long cuts. She is a noisy old girl in her highest gear. 510 rpm. I'm starting to fall in love with the old girl. Carroll Jamieson 16x40 lathe test bar |

I drained the oil again today. The 85w140 I used was holding a lot of air and I didn't like the way it looked. I'm going to try the manual recommended SAE140, but I might have to go thinner. I'm not sure of the weight I'd try next.
There was a crazy amount of steel sludge in the gearbox the first time. This time the magnet I put in collected a bunch of sludge. I flushed a bunch more out and and user low pressure compressed air to push more out the drain. Next oil change it will be near perfectly clean. |

I got talked into trying non-detergent SAE 30 and I think it's going to work out really well. It actually splashes and slings around the gearbox. No evidence of foaming. Just lots of oil movement.
Now, what to do with a gallon of SAE 140.... |

I did the final check on the CJ lathe today. I chucked up and dialed in a 1 3/4" diameter piece of 12L14 sticking out 12" with no tail support.
I took two 0.001" per side cuts and then measured the piece. End to end, it was within 0.0002" The deviation in the middle with a few rust spots was 0.0004" total in 12". Tomorrow, I'll take a couple more cuts and see what it does. So far, this 88 year old lathe is really blowing me away. This lathe is definitely not clapped out junk. It may explode at any time, but I'm going to get some great work out of it in the meantime. Have you ever had a machine tool that seemed to make hitting dimensions crazy easy? That is this machine so far. |
