Today I finished up a mountain tract cruise.  760 feet of elevation change.

When I got out of the truck it was calm, clear, and about 60 degrees.  As I climbed the mountain wind started blowing, clouds rolled in, and by 1:00 is was 35 degrees with 25 MPH winds and sideways sleet and rain.  30 minutes later it was back to sunny skies, albeit windy.

Nothing like Spring in central Virginia!!

Thanks.  It was really hard to set up the tripod inside the car, while trying to avoid tetanus- the doors no longer opened, so I had to partially crawl in through a broken window.  A lot of guesstimation about azimuth and zenith and such.  Compass no worky inside that thing.

This 4-year old plantation got positively hammered in a wildfire last year.  Just got replanted.

Looks like the fire was flat out walking the dog through those young pines.

Went out to play with the big boys.

Taking my John Deer 2023 with logging winch out to pull logs out of the woods for a friend.

The winch can pull 6,000 pounds at 3 feet per second through the woods if the terrain is good.

Here is the pile we pulled out today. White pine and hemlock. Most of the white pine is cut to 15 foot lengths. Going to use it for paneling a large room in neighbors house.
The hemlock will be cut and used for building material. We still have three trees down that need to be bucked and pulled out.

Couple cool ones from the weekend. These are edited pretty moody, but what the hell I like the look.

My buddy is shooting the AR- he doesn't own his own... yet.

D3200 with a 35mm prime. I have an 18-200 lens arriving this week, hoping to have some fun with it this Spring.

That 18-200 is a pretty good compromise walking-around lens for the money.  The 35 is a star and dirt cheap.  Keep up the good work; and don't be shy about posting!

You're on the path to something worse than BRD (black rifle disease):  BCD (black camera disease).

Finished up the logging operation yesterday. The little tractor with it's logging winch did pretty awesome. It pulled out a 23 foot white pine log like it was on roller skates.

This is the end result of a total 8 hours work by a couple old geezers. Me 77 my neighbor 66.

Caught this pic at just the right moment. A suspect log theif.

Our anniversary was this weekend, and after a bunch of back and forth we decided to go camping for the weekend.

I seriously could not have had a better weekend. Friday's sunset was beautiful. Dinner (Nebraska raised Ribeyes and lobster) was absolutely perfect (even though I forgot the meat thermometer). The old truck ran great, and the dogs behaved. We had one night without the kids, and then picked them up to join in on Saturday's fun. We hiked about 20k steps per day and just generally had a nice relaxing time.

I seriously don't think I've ever had a weekend where everything went so well.

The sunset on our anniversary:

Then of course late Friday night the sky took on a faint tint of red. I thought maybe there was a brush fire near by.

The camera told me I was wrong! What an incredible treat on our 10 year anniversary. I've never seen the Northern Lights, and the timing of this was pretty incredible!

Got home today, unpacked the stuff, and finished a few household chores followed by a great dinner.

Hands down one of the top 3 weekends of my life.

So I went to see some music on the James River yesterday, and headed out early so I could do some river trail riding and take a bunch of pics.

Checked the D500 battery before I left, saw it was about half full, and swapped it for a full battery.

Or so I thought. I get to my first location, pull the camera, and what’s this?  No focus?  Hmmm, maybe the lens isn’t seated. Yep, it’s seated. Oh!  No power!  Seems I’d swapped the half charge one for the dead one I hadn’t charged yet.

Oh well, at least I had the GoPro.

There was a thread in GD about solar panels for hiking, and it took me down a rabbit hole.

A pair of photos from 2019 out in Wyoming, taking at two different times during the night, one near midnight and the other at twilight, taken from two slightly different places near my tent, and with the framing being about 90º apart.

It's just a very rough edit.  A rough, ex post facto concept, really.  I might go back and see if I can do a more refined edit.
