TNVC Training completed our final open enrollment Nightfighter 201 for the 2023 fall training season this weekend (20-22 October 2023) in one of our staple training locations, Badlands Tactical in Grandfield, Oklahoma. This class was carved right down the middle with law enforcement and, as a certain short Irish cop from NYC would say, average earth people. Students drive the OTEMPO in any class and these guys were in it to win it for sure. A slightly smaller class than normal allowed us to get way more reps in. This class was run in conjunction with Nightfighter 101so we had a full house across the great Badlands facilities.
Bobby Whittington, Badlands owner and proprietor, is a world class host and friend of the organization. He runs a great facility with lodging on site, superb ranges and manages to make it DARK when the sun goes down. All kidding aside, there is zero light pollution at Badlands Tactical, making it an ideal low to no light training environment. We plan on conducting training here for as long as we can.
The weather was pretty standard for southwest Oklahoma, highs in the mid-80s and lows in the mid-50s. The bulk of this class was internal work so weather effects didn’t impact any or our work.
Student equipment was a mix of department issue and personally owned goggles and MFALs, with monocular and binocular goggles present, green and white screen. Most of the class were Nightfighter 101 graduates with the rest being grads from other world class courses out there. This helped us mash the gas pedal all the way down and get after course objectives with not a ton of warm up. We didn’t experience any weapon malfunctions at all, an indicator that guys are lubing their gear and that the word is still out there that these guns require lube to run.
This course is an advanced technology and problem-solving class that will work your ability to manipulate different technologies on your weapons and the ones attached to your head. Switchology is a thing, where you r equipment is mounted is a thing, how you are carrying (slings/pouches/chinstraps/etc) your equipment is a thing that all gets shaken out in this course from live fire to internal work. The world at night is measured in “millimeters and milliseconds”, and where your equipment is and where it’s mounted matter in ensuring that you’re able to select the appropriate technology at the appropriate time to gain information, make a decision and solve a problem. Students got tons of reps and definitely discovered several efficiencies to be gained through moving OR removing gear.
Finally, our students all had the “AHA” moment that all these technologies are complimentary and can all be used in conjunction with each other…yes…at the same time. This may fly in the face of commonly understood conventions, but if you can see everything you need to see, why wouldn’t we apply more energy either in the IR or visible spectrum at the same time. Through multiple reps, everyone also learned to trust the process and work their problems and technology in a methodical manner to have the best results at solving problems.
Additionally, several companies stepped up to offer students swag and door prizes for their attendance. We really appreciate their generosity and are proud to have them associated with our classes.
